Wasshoi / ワッショイ English Lyrics Translation

ENGLISH

Wasshoi

Ha
Take off your jeans
Put on your livery
And tie on a headband
Carry
The portable shrine
With overflowing energy
Come on come on come on
It's fun
All you youngsters
It's a festival (ha!)

Heave-ho heave-ho
It's starting
All of our feelings
Will become one
Heave-ho heavo-ho
Don't stop
Take a deep breath
And rock the shrine
This festival day comes just once a year

Ha
Take off your briefs
And put on a traditional lioncloth a little too tightly
Show off
Your butt to
That girl you like
My oh my oh my
You look so dashing
All you men
It's a festival (ha!)

Heave-ho heave-ho
It's starting
The men compete ruthlessly and shine
Heave-ho heave-ho
It's your chance
Stake your life
To charm that girl
This festival day comes just once a year
(Hah hah
Here we go
Hah hah
Here we go)

Ha
Take off your flattering clothes
And wave around
Your matching folding fan
Show everybody
Your zeal
Wave wave wave
So dazzling
All you women
It's a festival (ha!)

(Ten
Ten
Tentsukuten
Piihyara piihyara
Kakakakka
Neppeppeh
Neepeppeppe)

Ha
Stop your studying
Even if you have to stand on tiptoe come play the drums
Share the beat
With your whole family
Dondondokodoko
Do your best
All you kids
It's a festival (ha!)

Heave-ho heave-ho
It's starting
Laugh honestly
Speak from your heart
Heave-ho heave-ho
You're growing up
Don't be embarassed
By your first armpit hairs

Once this festival ends
Our normal lives
Will be waiting for us
And things will return to normal
The portable shrine is only here for now
The drums are only here for now
We live only now
It is so

Ha
I'll teach you
(Here we go)
We pioneered
This portable shrine and this road
(What how?!)
Aren't you surprised
We shake and shake
Our backs bent over the drums
We don't stop (it's so hard)
Grandpas, grandmas
It's a festival (ha!)

Heave-ho heave-ho
It's starting
Even though I'm old
My heart is 20
Heave-ho heave-ho
Don't take me lightly
Or I won't give you a New Year's gift
This festival day comes just once a year
(Hah hah
Here we go
Hah hah
Here we go)

Ha
Put away your camera
This is your livery
Put a headband on
Learn about Japan
With your body
Come on yeah yeah
Japan Fest
All you international exchange students
It's a festival (hey!)

Heave-ho heave-ho
It's starting
Eat sushi
And don't forget the wasabi
Heave-ho heave-ho
Here's your tea
From today you too
Are a splendid samurai
This festival day comes just once a year
(Hah hah
Here we go
Hah hah
Here we go)

Heave-ho heave-ho
It's starting
Men and women of all ages
Crossing borders
Heave-ho heave-ho
It's over
Don't idle
Hurry up and go home
Though the phone number you received
Was a fake, don't cry
Pay attention
You're wearing mascara, so don't cry
Put disinfectant on your blisters
Don't cry even if they break
Even if you lose to other youngsters
Don't cry
While riding the airplane
Back to your home country, don't cry
Don't idle
It's OK, so go home
Heave-ho heave-ho
It's over
This festival day comes just once a year (yoooo ha!)

OPINION

Wasshoi means heave-ho, especially in the context of a festival when carrying a heavy portable shrine. It's from BUMP's single Supernova/Karma. And wow, what a great song! I bet the members really had fun making it. It really catches the feeling of a Japanese festival!! And this song is great practice for English speakers studying Japanese. I particularly love this one because of the section about international exchange students, because it's so very accurate. XD And I love how the last stanza refers back to all the people they referenced in other stanzas: the men, women, kids, old people, international students, and everyone. It has a great feeling of all-inclusion and honesty and cheer. I left a lot of the onomatopoeia and festival chants in their original form, but I changed some into their English approximations. Lyrics are from http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1345121723. You can listen to this fun and humorous song at the link below!
