English Lyrics Translation

ENGLISH

Bye Bye, Thank You

Tomorrow is finally the day that I leave
It's my last night, but I've got nothing to do
I listen to the radio with bad reception
I whistle an off-key song

My coat is packed away in my bag
My tickets and wallet, and incidentally, that person's photo
I'm gonna go see everyone
And I won't even be able to put up a fight

I'll leave tomorrow and take the whole day
And go to the town of my dreams
It's the most wonderful thing, but
I'll be all alone, everyone gone
I'll just have to try and keep my spirits up

Where is there a place for me?
Even if I travel far there's no guarantee I'll find it
I can't even force a smile
So I cast my eyes down and mutter quietly, that

I'm not afraid to be alone…

I'll write a letter as soon as I arrive
On some unsuitable blue stationary
And attach some out-of-focus photograph
But before anything else I'll write the letter

Tomorrow is finally the day that I leave
Saying "bye bye" or "thank you" is simple, but
Tomorrow is always "the day that I leave"
I'm not scared or anything

Holding the song I wrote last night
I'll go to the town of my dreams
It's the most wonderful thing, so
All alone beneath the sky
I'll have to try to sing my best

My place is here
Even if I travel far the place for me doesn't change
From now on I'll be all alone, but
It'll probably be OK, everyone here will watch over me

My place is here
Even when I grow old my place will not change
From now on I'll be all alone, but
Yeah, it's OK! Everyone here is watching over me

Watching over me

I'm not afraid to be alone…
I'm not afraid to be alone…
I'm not afraid to be alone…
I'm not afraid to be alone…

OPINION

What an awesome song. This song might be about the singer's feelings as the band got more famous and they moved to Tokyo from their hometown... But I think everyone can feel a connection to the words. Only one line was a bit ambiguous to translate: Tomorrow is always "the day that I leave." Alternatively, it could be translated as "Tomorrow is the day I leave forever."

ALSO, please please check out the gorgeous music video (below) for this song. It's done with watercolor cartoon illustrations and paper cutouts and is really beautiful. And the best part is they were all drawn by Fujiwara Motou (also the singer, songwriter, and composer for BUMP OF CHICKEN.) Seriously, this guy is the best!
