R.I.P. English Lyrics Translation

ENGLISH

R.I.P.

That you were not there
That I was not there
When this thought suddenly occurs to me
I realize that more than back then, now…

The sound of a dynamo
A winding, hilly road
The gear I longed for
Someone who was tampered with
Returning home from catching crayfish
The first night that I
Got lost when hunting for
The mysterious searchlight

There were too many mysteries to remember
Although by now I've solved them and their magic has left

I don't like rain boots
I love umbrellas
If you lift this here
Look, there's the secret base
The place where we put our bikes
Going to visit
My secret friend with a tail

I had many more things I couldn't talk about then
But not because my lonliness has gone away

That you were not there
We can't make each other understand what happened in those far-off days
When this thought suddenly occurs to me
The scenery around me becomes blurry

Using a thermometer
To get out early
Setting sun in the shoe cupboard
One sigh
On the morning of Mother's Day
Talking to my father
The grave of my friend with a tail

The sad experiences
Became my treasures
I'm sure you've got a lot of those too

That I was not there
That now I can be by your side
When this thought suddenly occurs to me
The world shines bright

As long as we can see the same things
I'm happy
Even if we don't feel the same
That's OK
If things are going to change
I want to see them all first
If you'll go away some day
Then I want to know that you were here

I think someone wanted to be here
This is something I want too
When this thought suddenly occurs to me
I become so frightened I can't sleep

That you were not there
That I was not there
When this thought suddenly occurs to me
I realize that now is more precious to me than back then

It's frightening

Beneath an advertising balloon
The hero of the event hall
Photochemical smog
A pulled-down baseball cap
I thought I was the happiest person
On Earth
I want to show you
The me from that day

JAPANESE

R.I.P.

OPINION

This song is largely a collection of memories from childhood. The speaker knows that the important person he is addressing didn't experience those formative, magical things with him, and can't really understand them. I love the random collection of images. They don't really make sense when the listener hears them, but that's the way it is supposed to be. I really love this song. I think it's very relatable. And what makes it so great is how he completes the sentence from the beginning (though I had to change the wording slightly): "I realize that now is more precious to me than back then." Even if they can't know about each others' childhoods it's OK, because they decide to share experiences from now on.
