My Struggles Sorting the Trash
It's been many months and years since your dreams became trash
You courageously decide to throw it out, it's garbage after all
It seems quite tough when you look closely, it must be incombustable
You breathe a sigh of relief on the appointed Tuesday
But it hasn't been taken away, there's a note attached to it
What, what? It says, "Burnable trash is Monday"
Burnable? This is burnable trash?
It doesn't look like it, can this really burn?
I'll burn it, I'll turn it into ash
If you won't do it for me
It's been many months and years since your dreams became trash
You courageously proclaim that you won't make the same mistake twice
It's clearly very big, it must be oversize garbage
In order to get rid of this it takes a fee
But it hasn't been taken away, there's a note attached to it
"Put regular trash in a trash bag"
Can it fit? Can this fit in a trash bag?
Can I put this in such a small bag?
Yes, 3000 of these could fit
If you wanted them to
Can they handle it? Can they process this garbage?
Is this trash they can dispose of easily?
Is this trash? Is it really trash?
I don't want to admit it, but I might be wrong
Yes, it's trash! It's in the way!
Just take it away, it's a public nuisance
But if I don't throw it away… No, I must
The thought that it might have an owner is just a dream
Since that day it's always always felt like I'm in a dream

「普通のゴミはゴミ袋へ」

小さな袋に 入るのか
入るでしょ それ3000個ぐらい
大きくあって欲しいだけなのでは

OPINION
I'm sure I've said this several times before, but this is my very favorite song by BUMP OF CHICKEN. But I mean it this time. This is actaully my favorite song ever. The sound is just so unique and, more than catchy, it's captivating and pulls you along. It also encapsulates a lot of BUMP's favorites themes and messages. The speaker is trying to throw away his dreams, but he can't. Often the speakers / main characters of BUMP's songs do the opposite of what they should in order to send a stronger message to the listener. I should also probably mention that the way trash is handled in Japan is that certain types of trash (burnable, non-burnable, oversize, etc) are separated and handled differently depending on where you live. But I think it's more than that the speaker is having a hard time following the waste disposal guidelines of his area… It's that dreams are not meant to be gotten rid of. :)
